PSA 9 vs PSA 10: how to compare a graded-card purchase

Compare exact graded cards using PSA standards, certificate checks and completed-sale references. Understand why an asking price is not market value.

The quick answer

Compare the same card and edition in each grade, verify the certificate and inspect completed-sale evidence. The grade difference alone does not establish how much extra you should pay.

Match the card before comparing the grade

Record the year, set, player or character, collector number, parallel, language and any serial numbering. Two slabs with the same subject can contain very different cards. An autograph or memorabilia variant adds another distinction.

Only after the identity matches should you compare grade and price. A one-of-one sports card is not a meaningful direct price reference for an ordinary copy featuring the same player.

Use grading standards carefully

PSA publishes its grading standards. Read those as an explanation of the grading system, not a rule that turns every numerical difference into the same price premium. The card in front of you still needs visual examination.

This article does not regrade a card from photographs. If a slab’s label, condition or certificate raises questions, resolve them before comparing its asking price with another grade.

Prefer completed-sale comparisons

Use recent completed sales for the same card, grading company and grade where those records are reliable. Check whether auction premiums, shipping or other charges are included. A single exceptional sale can be a poor reference.

Seller asks show what someone wants. They do not show a transaction. Our catalogue’s PSA-labelled example is included as a real listing to inspect, not as proof of a typical PSA 9 premium or the value of a PSA 10 equivalent.

Decide what you want from the purchase

For a display collection, you may prefer a lower-cost copy that meets your visual standard. For a grade-specific collection, the exact grade may be central. Neither choice guarantees a future return.

Set a maximum total based on your purpose and evidence, then verify the slab and listing. Do not assume that paying more for a higher grade makes the purchase safer or more profitable.

Frequently asked questions

Is PSA 10 always worth a fixed multiple of PSA 9?

No. Compare the same card and edition using relevant completed sales. A fixed multiplier is not established.

Can a seller ask be used as the market value?

It is evidence of an asking price, not a completed transaction. Keep those two numbers separate.

Does House of Stox currently show a PSA 10 equivalent for the example below?

This guide does not claim a matched PSA 10 listing. The displayed card is a real catalogue example, not a paired valuation study.
